the Week in Rock for Hunger

>> Sunday, November 30, 2008

We hope that everyone got to satisfy their Turkey bellies, and spent some great time with their loved ones this weekend. Be sure to recognize everyone and everything that you are thankful for. Never hesitate to thank someone. Even if you forgot to say thank you in the past, you should call them up and point out that time when they were there for you, and thank them for it. It is never to late to show your thankfulness. With that being said, here is what is going on this week in Rock for Hunger. This time we are starting the week tonight for a very important event.

SUNDAY – Strategy and Prayer meet up to defeat the Anti-Feeding Ordinance
There will be a meeting tonight at 7pm at the First United Church of Christ on 4605 Curry Ford Rd. Orlando, FL 32812. Send me an e-mail with your phone number if you would like to go: chris@rockforhunger.org. The meeting will be to come up with a peaceful strategy to overcome our struggle against the Anti-Feeding Ordinance, as the city of Orlando has appealed the ruling of the judge. Basically, the Anti-Feeding Ordinance is still in place, but can not be exercised until this case is over. This could take another year to two years in the court system. We are safe to break bread with the needy until a decision has been made, but the biggest worry is that a decision has not been made. I’ll write about some peaceful solutions tomorrow.

MONDAY – Food Sharing at Lake Eola
Join us for our weekly Food Sharing at 6:45pm as we meet on the corner of Robinson and Cathcar Ave. in Downtown Orlando. This is 90 weeks in a row without a break. Why? Because all of you AWESOME volunteers ROCK FOR HUNGER!

Featured Artist of the Week: Thanksgiving Edition

>> Friday, November 28, 2008

I know this post is a few days late, but can you blame a human for being caught up with the holiday this week. I am currently posting this from my former home of Coral Springs, Florida after having spent a tremendous holiday with loved ones. How was your Thanksgiving? Please leave your comments.

So, after realizing that I needed to post something this week, I drew a blank as to who to cover. For the first time ever, I did not know what to ramble about in this column. Do I write about a band that played a show on Halloween? A band that volunteered to help out this year on Thanksgiving? Nothing? The holiday, in general?

After much internal debate, I decided to write about G-Ro. I do this because he is someone that has truly stepped up his game toward becoming a musician, Board Member, and overall community spokesperson for hunger and homelessness. His devotion to the cause was prevalent on Thanksgiving, as he led the planning for the 2nd Annual Rock for Hunger Thanksgiving Breakfast and posted this motivating video seen below.

http://blog.rockforhunger.org/2008/11/thanksgiving-breakfast-volunteer.html

Thanks, G-Ro (AKA Greg Rollett). You are truly an inspiration to us all.

More Thanksgiving Volunteer Opportunities in Orlando

>> Tuesday, November 25, 2008

The season to give is finally here! It is always great to see so much magic happen in the November and December months. It makes the whole years work totally worth it! Our Thanksgiving Breakfast is totally full with Volunteers! No worries! We have two more great Thanksgiving Volunteer Opportunities for you in Orlando. Here is how you can make a difference in Orlando this weekend:

WEDNESDAY - Meals for Kids
Where: New Image Youth Center
Time: 1pm-2pm
Location: 212 S. Parramore Ave. Orlando, FL 32805
Contact: Chris Goyzueta – chris@rockforhunger.org
What: We will be making lunch and serving snacks to the kids for a Thanksgiving meal to take home.
What to Bring (for 35 kids):
Foam Plates
Cups
Drinks (juice packs – capri suns, etc.)
Snacks
Zip Lock Bags
Napkins
Any individually wrapped snacks (Little Debbie’s, etc)
Dr. Seuss Reading Books
Why: Many of the children being served, may only eat on Thanksgiving Day. However, the need goes much beyond that. With four days out of school, some of the less fortunate children may not eat three of the four days of Thanksgiving. These snacks, and meals we are serving will hopefully stretch a little longer than just one day.

SATURDAY – Storage Clean-up & Food/Clothes Sorting
Where: Rock for Hunger Storage
Time: 10am-12pm
Location: 200 W Michigan St Orlando, FL 32806 (at Michigan Mini Storage)
Contact: Chris Goyzueta chris@rockforhunger.org
What: Food and clothes sorting, and storage clean up. Help us have a fun, organized, and safe work environment for all the volunteers, and help us serve those in need better.

Featured Artist of the Week: Rock for Hunger Fest 3 Review

>> Saturday, November 22, 2008

One week ago today, the third annual Rock for Hunger Festival rocked Orlando, Florida. For those of you who attended, thank you - and I hope you thoroughly enjoyed yourselves. The feedback we have received has been very positive and I am very thankful for its unexpected fluidity. For those that failed to make it out, shame on you! You missed out a truly momentous event that benefited the entire Central Florida community.

I know we have been covering this event as if it was the only thing that existed on the planet for the last month, but rest assured that this will be the final post about last week's festival. I can't promise, however, that we won't start promoting the newly greenlit "Rock for Hunger Fest 4" in a few months. That will obviously be coming up in November of 2009.

Now on to the good stuff - What did you see/miss? What bands tore the roof off? Below, you will find a list of some of my favorite happenings throughout the event:

- POB charmed the crowd walking through the doors as they opened at 2:00pm.
- Social Ghost opened the Bud Light stage with their rendition of flawless odd-time pop rock.
- Planet Smoothie served the exclusive "Rocksophagus Smoothie" (which happened to be delicious.
- Much to the weatherman's dismay, it didn't rain all day.
- Junkie Rush had everyone dancing.
- Ronyai and Rubox Cube proved to us why you don't need to play an instrument to put on an entertaining musical performance.
- The Whole Foods stage was the most popular of the day.
- Alex Baugh had girls dancing on the stage with him.
- Union Made put some funk on the Main Stage.
- Volunteers were running around with determination - and chaos it seemed.
- The first ever Talk4Hunger newspaper was disbursed as the program for the event.
- Mirrorpal highlighted the Bud Light Stage as the best band all day (in my opinion).
- Laura Reed surprised everyone (in a good way).
- G-Ro, who also doubled as event host Greg Rollett, changed his wardrobe multiple times - But he also happened to highlight the Whole Foods stage.
- Kardinal Offishall worked the crowd like a born entertainer by having everyone moving at all times.

Interview with Mr. Bakari Burns from the Orlando Health Care Center for the Homeless

>> Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Today fellow Board Member Logan Lenz and I had the honor to interview Mr. Bakari Burns form the Orlando Health Care Center for the Homeless (HCCH). We learned a lot about their mission, and how they serve less fortunate individuals in our tri-county area. Their facility is located on Orange Blossom Trail near Downtown Orlando. Their services are provided by Medical Doctors, Physician Assistant, and Nurse Practitioners. They also have students who job shadow their doctors who may either be in medical school, or even pre-med students. This is a great opportunity for our pre-meds from UCF pre-Med AMSA.

Mr. Bakari Burns told us that at a given moment there are 8,500-9,300 homeless individuals in our tri-county area which includes Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties. From the individuals they serve approximately 60% are homeless and 40% are less fortunate and uninsured. We were amazed to learn that HCCH sees approximately 250 patients per day. This also includes their mobile clinic, which is a bus that goes around the tri-county area to serve individuals that don’t have proper transportation to make it to the HCCH facility. This mobile unit includes two rooms, one for physical treatment, and another for Mental Health treatment. Below you can see a quick video from Mr. Bakari Burns and learn about this great local organization.

Rock for Hunger is looking forward to this new partnership, and assisting HCCH to provide health care to the individuals we serve every week.

THURSDAY – 15th Annual UCF Hunger Banquet
One of the events were it all began! It was the 12th Annual Hunger Banquet that inspired myself, Chris Goyzueta, to be part of the solution to poverty and homelessness. A year later, I organized the 13th Annual Hunger Banquet along with the inaugural Rock for Hunger Fest. Then the 14th Annual Hunger Banquet was organized by my beautiful Ms. Rock for Hunger, Kraesly. Rock for Hunger Fest 3: Thank you for Rockin for Change!

>> Sunday, November 16, 2008

Rock for Hunger Fest 3 set the tone for future Rock for Hunger Festivals to come. This was the festival that RFHFest was envisioned to be from the start. Whoever missed RFHFest 3, truly missed out! The festival fused top talents from Hip-Hop, Rock, Acoustic, Hard Rock, Reggae, Funk, Jam Band, Blues, R&B, and even Beat Boxing. This year’s festival was absolutely amazing from beginning to end. Many of attendees who came through the doors at 2pm, stuck around an enjoyed every minute of the festival from POB warming up the crowd on the Whole Foods stage, to Kardinal Offishall getting dangerous on the main stage. The festival featured many great vendors and artists, such as Planet Smoothie, Whole Foods Market, Rock Star Limo Service/Superior Transportation (The Offishall ride for Kardinal aka Mr. Dangerous), XL106.7, and much more.

From Rock for Hunger Fest 3 we can learn that people from all difference cultural backgrounds and walks of life can come together and make a difference. Our committee who organized the event, was comprised of a great diverse group of individuals who came together in harmony to create this amazing event. At RFHFest 3, we blended ever musical style to showcase the many great hidden talents lying within the Orlando Music Community. Through music, we proved that all kinds of people can come together. At Rock for Hunger Fest 3 we proved that “Music can Change the World, because Music can Change People (Bono).” We would like to thank everyone who attended our annual festival of brining the community together with music and peace. Thanks for being part of the “Change we want to see in the World (Ghandi).” We hope to see you on Monday night, and many more RFH events!

Featured Artist of the Week: RFH Fest 3 Preview

>> Thursday, November 13, 2008

The time has come again. Rock for Hunger Fest 3 is finally here! As much as our staff will tell you that we are incredibly excited, fear and uncertainly always shows its face in the background before such a major event. We have worked our hands to the bone to bring you this festival, so you better believe it will be the best event of the year. Below, you will find my personal preview of the music and artists appearing at the festival based off of a few questions I have received from ticket buyers.

Just in case you weren't 100% convinced of your attendance on Saturday, I think this should put you over the top.

If I can only see a handful of bands on Saturday, who should I see?

As difficult of a question as that is to answer, considering that every single act on the bill was hand-selected by our entire committee, I will try to respond as unbiased as possible. The answer also has a lot to do with your personal taste.

To make it fair, I will try to avoid listing any of the previous featured artists promoted in this column.

Pictured Left to Right: Kardinall Offishall, Junkie Rush, and Rubox Cube.

To satisfy your hip-hop needs and endless desire to dance, you will definitely need to stay for Kardinall Offishall. After all, how could you miss the first ever live rendition of the hit "Dangerous" in Florida? History in the making my friends.

For your funk rock fix, Junkie Rush will be a grand enjoyment. They have never ceased to amaze the Orlando community as they continue to get better and better.

Finally, Rubox Cube will be one of the most refreshing acts of the night. Who doesn't want to take a break from all of the rock, reggae, and hip-hop to hear a very talented beatboxer? He will definitely entertain you on the Whole Foods Stage.

If you haven't already, get your tickets now!

We will see you in a few hours at the Plaza Theatre for Rock for Hunger Fest 3!

A Pot of Gatoroni and a Stack of Hope

>> Wednesday, November 5, 2008

On Monday night, aka election eve, I made my return to the Rock For Hunger Monday night food sharing in Downtown Orlando. This was the first time I made my way over after the Anti-Feeding Ordinance had been lifted and only the second week Rock For Hunger took over Beautiful Lake Eola.

The new setting is the start of a new beginning for Rock For Hunger. With new board members, initiatives, plans and a new community website in the works, Monday night was a ray of hope that everything Chris, myself and the rest of the gang set out to do a few years ago.

Gatoroni
You see, a little ramen noodles inside of a large gatorade container can turn more smiles, thank yous and good times than most of the businesses I deal with on a daily basis. That Gatoroni is the inspiration that I needed to light a fire under my ass and get some of the operations going.

This year has been a year of growing pains for the Rock For Hunger crew. It's been a growing pain year for the US as well. With everything that has happened; the growing unemployment rate, the bailouts, the election, the War in Iraq and increase in need vs. opportunities to help these needs, there is no time like RIGHT NOW to get involved. Be a part of the Social Change that is happening with young people. Be a part of the difference that can make this place a great place to live, work, raise a family and help those that need to catch a break.

I get curve balls everyday
I swing and miss. But I have a support team that brings me back to the ball game the next day. Within Rock For Hunger, you have that opportunity to bring someone back in the game. Monday night I was a part of that. I am glad I came back.

(This post was written by Greg Rollett, a Rock For Hunger Board Member, founder of Endagon Innovations and a Gen-Y Marketer and Blogger.)
*Get your Rock For Hunger Fest 3 tickets today and enjoy 20+ bands, 25+ vendors and artists, great food, music and the chance to be a part of Generation WE.*

Featured Artists of the Week: Kardinal Offishall and Hor!zen

It has been difficult fitting the plethora of amazing bands playing RFH Fest 3 into this weekly column. Because of this, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to find out that we have two featured artists this week as well. This week, we are highlighting the headliner of the event, Kardinal Offishall, and Hor!zen, local reggae experts.

The only thing "Dangerous" about Kardinal Offishall is not coming to see him perform on November 15th at the Plaza Theatre. So what if Akon won't be there? Have you heard his other tracks? Try listening to "Numba 1," "Burnt," and "Set it Off" on his MySpace page. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised to find out how relevant his music is and how delightful his tonalities are on record.

We are expecting Kardinal to tear up the Plaza stage next Saturday. We all have no doubt that he will sound better live than on record. Do you really want to miss out on dancing to one of the hottest songs out right now? I don't think you do. Now that would be "Dangerous."

Hor!zen (Yes, that is an exclamation point, not an i) has been rocking Central Florida for several years now. After seeing them perform around many times, they never cease to amaze me. Expectedly, they are getting better and better as time passes on.

My personal favorite track of theirs is "Snowboarder Dub." The song not only displays their sense of humor, but it also highlights their ability to lay down a tasty groove. That song, as well as others such as "Just You" and "Troublesome" can be heard at the band's MySpace page.

The foundation is set. The bands will be there. The artists will be there. The vendors will be there.

Will you be there?

An Era of Change: The Generation of WE

As a nonprofit leader it is frowned upon to support a certain political party, or a certain political issue. However, it is the job of every American, and every American company or organization to support our President. Now that the election is over, we are here to proudly support our President Elect Barack Obama!!! As John McCain said “we must offer our next president our goodwill and earnest effort to find ways to come together.” We have officially entered an ERA OF CHANGE! This morning I had one of my dearest neighbors call me, and thanked me for knocking on doors, making phone calls, and telling people to go out to vote. She told me that she remembered the days when she was looked at as dirt, and was spit on for being a woman of color and charisma. She remembered when she had to be segregated and use the colored water fountain, or the colored bathroom. There were days when she had to go into the back door of the dentists’ office, and get her teeth pulled and worked on without any Novocain or medication. She was so proud of all the young people who have finally spoken, and whose voices were finally heard, and said ENOUGH! For decades many of our fellow Americans have suffered and were looked down upon. This era is over, and an era of change has begun.

Two years ago, the media doubted that Barack Obama could pull it off. But with his hard work and grassroots efforts, and passion to motivate, organize, his understanding of the needs and cries of the American people, and gain of support from millions of young Americans in our country whose voices were finally heard, Barack Obama has begun the era of Change. It is now time that we follow in the foot steps of our President elect, and begin the era of WE! This is OUR election; WE said that WE want CHANGE! Now it is time for us to change, and for us to stand TOGETHER as AMERICANS! As we expect our newly President elect Barack Obama to follow through on his words, he also expects us to follow through on ours. We need to continue helping and supporting our neighbors in need, we need to turn of our television sets and pay attention to our children’s education so they can be successful, we need to learn from and respect our elders, we need to work together to find cures for cancer and disease, we need to work together that our fellow Americans and soldiers that gave their life for this country don’t have to sleep on the streets, it is our duty to make sure that no American child must go to bed hungry, and as our President elect Barack Obama says, we need to stand TOGETHER no matter what the color of our skin, no matter what political party we support, gay or straight, disabled or not disabled, old or young; we need to stand TOGETHER as AMERICANS! It’s time for CHANGE, and it begins with us. We need to “be the CHANGE we want to see in THE WORLD.”
