Featured Artist of the Week: Pepper

>> Saturday, August 30, 2008

This week's Featured Artist, Pepper, is a great example of a band that has worked really hard to become one of the biggest acts in their genre. Rock for Hunger' Executive Director, Chris Goyzueta, has had the pleasure of speaking with them at one of their shows earlier this year and has since been an avid follower of the band. I have even caught him singing some Pepper tunes while driving in his car.

To refresh everyone's memory. Here are those interviews:

Featured Artist of the Week: The Secret State

>> Friday, August 22, 2008

I don't think I could post this any later than I am. In a few hours, the concert that I was supposed to be referencing and helping to promote via this blog, will have started and the Featured Artist will have rocked the Haven. Tonight, although the post may be short, The Secret State's talent should not be undermined or overlooked.

Jacksonville's The Secret State have been avid Rock for Hunger supporters for over a year now. Their involvement and dedication to the cause is not the reason they are being profiled as a featured artist, however. Simply by listening to a few tracks on their MySpace page, you will be able to hear the reason why Rock for Hunger chooses to continue to invite the band out to many events. Songs like "Move to Me" and "Look at Me Honestly and Lie" are two of my personal favorites and offer a healthy dose of TSS's catchy alternative rock sound. The songs come from the band's latest release, "Erase the Memories," which is something worth picking up.

As aforementioned, the Secret State will be at the Haven tonight, August 22nd. They will be appearing with a great list of rock bands including Spoone, Afterglow Radio, and Stereoside. TSS will take the stage at 9:30, so make sure you are there to check them out.

I hope to see everyone there in a few hours.

Upcoming Schedule:

Aug 22 2008 8:00P The Haven - w/ Stereoside & Afterglow Radio Winter Park, FL

Featured Artist of the Week: Afterglow Radio

>> Wednesday, August 13, 2008

If you asked me what is in my CD player right now, I would undoubtedly respond with "Afterglow Radio." Their new album, which is slated for release this weekend at their show on Saturday, August 16th at the Social, is the most well-rounded and versatile rock record I have heard all year. The album, dubbed Find Yourself Again features a plethora of radio-friendly tracks, including "Wasted," "Not My Love Song," and "I'm Running."

Afterglow Radio has been on tour for the last week in preparation for their CD release party this weekend. They have been sweeping through Florida with another Endagon Entertainment artist, Uncrowned. The CD release show will feature Uncrowned, In Passing, and special guests.

For a band that has been rocking the Central Florida area for a few years now, AGR show no sign of exhaustion. In fact, there is no question that they are hotter and more popular than ever. As their fanbase continues to grow throughout the nation, one should definitely keep a tab on this talented group of guys.

Check out their MySpace, buy their new CD, and come out to the release party this Saturday night. Take part in the "Afterglow Revolution" before it takes over the world.

Rising Stars Battle of the Bands

>> Tuesday, August 12, 2008

This past weekend we had the first ever Rising Stars Battle of the Bands, in which the winner will play at Rock for Hunger Fest 3 on Saturday November 15, 2008. The first round got all kicked off at Central Station on Saturday with Pop Suicide, Mechanical Mayhem, and Lunatic Picnic. This battle of the bands was based on a point system which gave bands points for pre-selling tickets, people coming to see them on the day of the show, volunteering, wearing the RFH shirts, and their fans brining canned goods. It was a really tight race on Saturday with Pop Suicide coming out on top.

Sunday was a really amazing show at Back Booth with three amazing bands: Black Ship Sky, Built to be Broken, and Satellite. All bands had a very high score, but Black Ship Sky killed it by scoring in every category. The band had almost all of their friends bring in canned goods, and sold all of their pre sale tickets. They volunteered on Monday night, promote Rock for Hunger on XL, and were all rocking the shirt on stage. Both Black Ship Sky and Pop Suicide are going to go to the final round to be in October with the winner of August 30th and a wild card pick. This wild card just may come from the Sunday show.

Featured Artist of the Week: The Hush Sound

>> Sunday, August 10, 2008

So this post is late. A few days late actually. All I can do is apologize for my tardiness. Hopefully we can put that nonsense aside and acknowledge this week's featured artist: The Hush Sound.

Rock for Hunger's Executive Director, Chris Goyzueta, interviewed the Hush Sound a few months back when they were in town with Panic at the Disco. There, the band showed a sincere interest in R4H, its cause, and what Chris was looking to do in the future. Combined with their raw talent and escalating popularity, there is no way we could deny them of a featured artist spot this week.

The Hush Sound's unique pairing of male/female vocal stylings truly make for an interesting musical experience. Songs like "Honey" and "We Intertwined" reveal their blend of soft-indie-pop music best. These Illinois natives thrive on their whimsical sound and simplistic writing. Check out their music on their MySpace page by clicking here.

After their successful stint on tour with Panic at the Disco, the Hush Sound is now headlining their own club tour. They will be in Orlando, Florida at the Social on August 16th. For those that can make it out, I definitely suggest doing so.
