Myspace Rocks 4 Causes
>> Thursday, April 24, 2008
*Every 2nd and 4th Thursday, in house Social Media guy, Greg Rollett will be posting about the ways the Social Media and the Internet affect non-profit and causes both locally and globally. Greg can be reached at his Social Media Blog and can be found Twittering from sun up till early morning, or you can go old school and shoot him an email with feedback or questions.*
Myspace is a regular daily stop for most teens and members of Gen-Y. It is the biggest Social Network in the world and in the U.S. alone, more than doubles the page views of its closest rival, Facebook. Even with those kinds of bragging rights in your arsenal, Myspace is playing catch-up to Facebook and other Web 2.0 sites in terms of its ability to take in 3rd party programs and applications.
Today, at the Web 2.0 expo, Myspace officially launched 'Myspace Apps.' The efforts are actually make a great impression on the site. It is very similar (dare I say identical) to Facebook Applications, but done in a very Myspace way.
Greg, what does this have to do with Rock For Hunger?
Well, hopefully a developer sees this post and wants to build and app for us! All jokes aside, there are some great applications hidden in the platform that deal with non-profits and causes.
Here are some highlights and some fun sites:
Idol Gives Back:
This app is straight form your favorite tv show. Once installed, you get a pledge form to put on your page, so your friends can give money to causes supported by celebrities.
Social Vibe
Social Vibe meshes to advertisers / brands with cool causes to help raise awareness and money. Until I get Rock For Hunger featured, check out some other cool not-for-profits like Invisible Children and To Write Love on Her Arms.
While there are over 1,000 apps at launch, there are only a handful that deal directly with causes and making a difference. I am positive that more will come and hopefully we will be able to integrate into some of them and let our fans and supporters help extend our brand virally through Myspace and their App platform.
Social Media Question of the Week:
What is your favorite Facebook or Myspace application and why?
The best answer will win 2 free tickets to the May 30th concert at AKA featuring yours truly, Daylight District and other great local talent! (leave your answer in the comments section)

That is a good question. There are a lot of great applications. I might be way out of touch with what is cool, but I like the ilike music app, and of course the You Tube box app. Got lots of great You Tube videos, and gotta share them any way possible.
@chris g. - those are 2 of the most popular apps there are, so you are right there with the rest of the pack! Music and video sharing are key elements to a viral campaign. thanks for sharing
