the Peace Gathering

>> Monday, February 4, 2008

Over the next few weeks we are going to cover some Nobel Peace Prize winners for the Peace Gathering. When thinking about the Nobel Peace Prize one might ask themselves many questions. What is the Nobel Peace Prize? What are the requirements or criteria for the Nobel Peace Prize? Who founded the Nobel Peace Prize? Who has won the Nobel Peace Prize? Has an American or American President won the Nobel Peace Prize? We will answer a lot of those questions over the next few weeks for the Peace Gathering, and provide some nice links for information on the Nobel Peace Prize, and Nobel Peace Prize winners.

Every year since 1901 the Nobel Prize has been awarded for achievements in
physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and for peace. The Nobel
Prize is an international award administered by the Nobel Foundation in
Stockholm, Sweden. In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank established The Sveriges Riksbank
Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel
Prize. Each prize consists of a medal, personal diploma, and a cash award. (http://nobelprize.org/)

The nobel peace prize is awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." The first ever recipient of the Nobel Prize was Henry Dunant.

Dunant received the first ever Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 for his role in founding the International Red Cross and for initiating the Geneva Convention. His humanitarianism was the only thing throughout Dunant’s life that was consistent. The Red Cross is to this day still one of the most recognized organizations worldwide helping people all over the world who are suffering from war, natural disasters, and many other events. The focus of the International Red Cross is to stop weapons which are killing people, landmine victims, missing persons, women in war, children in war, and much more. Current big focuses are on helping in Kenya, Darfur, Gaza, Columbia, Russia, Pakistan, and many other countries.

It must be really great to have created an organization that helps people all over the world, and has been around for over 100 years serving its mission and purpose. Now there are many great organizations out there seeking to do the same helping people with all different Social Issues. In next weeks Rock for Hunger’s “the Peace Gathering” we’ll cover the first American who won the Nobel Peace Prize along with some other cool facts. The next edition of “the Peace Gathering” will be on Saturday as normal. Make sure to get out there and get involved in your community. Giving is the greatest thing a person can do. Remember if you give in a time of need, you will always receive! Giving is the greatest investment anyone can ever make.
