Global Issues: Stop the Genocide in Darfur

>> Wednesday, February 13, 2008

One would think that a 21st Century global society would have learned from tragedies of the past. After seeing centuries of suffering from the destruction of ethnic, racial, religious or national group’s, one would finally put an end to such horrible events. Genocide is a preventable disaster that can haunt entire cultures, and bring hate between two groups of people for many years to come. Genocides have taken place in many different cultures including the United States of America when Andrew Jackson took the Native Americans to die on the Trail of Tears. Other genocides include the Spaniards destroying entire cultures, and civilizations after discovering the Americas, Adolf Hitler’s destruction of the Jews during WWII, to the Bosnian genocide in the 90’s, Rwanda, and now the great genocide that has killed close to 400,000 and displaced more than 2.5 million in the Darfur region in the country of Sudan.

The war in Darfur began in 2003 due to ethnic and tribal differences. A militia group called the Janjawid are torturing, massacring, raping, and capturing the tribes of Darfur in their region of Sudan. The question is how do we stop this genocide? However, the real answer to that question would be, what would you do if thousands of people were massacred, raped, beaten, and displaced to a specific camp in your hometown? What would you do to stop that from growing and matters worsening? If this happened in your hometown, you would most likely immediately cry out for help, support, and hope others to spread the word for more help to come along the way. One of the biggest ways to help end the tragic genocide is awareness and by supporting organizations that are taking action to stop the genocide. There are some great organizations out there such as Save Darfur, Darfur Genocide, and even the local Orlando organization Project Darfur.

This is our global awareness segment for the week. The goal of these writings is about awareness. It is up to you what you do with them, and it is totally up to you to figure out where you can make the most difference yourself. The only wrong way of helping others, is to do nothing at all. Give causes such as these your voice, time, funds, or any other way you feel you can make a difference in the world for the better. Just something to think about, not meant in offense to anyone. There are close to 78% of the United States population that say they are Christians. With a population of now 301 million that would make up about 234 million people. What kind of a world would we live in when 234 million people start taking action like Christians and give back to the poor, and less fortunate? These numbers don’t even include all the other faith based groups that preach about helping the less fortunate, and giving back to the community. Just imagine that....how would this country and the word be if everyone did a little bit of something rather than a lot of nothing? Not targeting any population, or specific person, this is just something important to think about.

Either way we love you all, and hope to see more and more people each day take action and get involved. Feel free to reach out to us anytime, and ask how you can help in your community. You can e-mail us at volunteer@rockforhunger.org.
Peace,

Chris G.
