Rock for Hunger Awareness: Update from Kenya

>> Tuesday, January 29, 2008

After almost a month of struggle over a protest over the election, one would hope for matters in Kenya to have gotten better by now. However, it seems like our friends in Kenya are beginning to suffer more than ever. What started out as a political crisis, is now starting to turn in to a ethnic war. In today’s Orlando Sentinel it talked about “Kisumu the third largest city burst into flames again Monday as thousands of rioters tore through the streets, burned down stores, looted schools and vented their rage over a spate of ethnically driven killings during the weekend.” Now almost 800 people have been killed in the past month since the election. It is sad to see when you visit the website from our friends from Ushahidi, and see more and more flames of violence pop up on their map that shows areas of violence in Kenya.

According to an article from the Associated Press a UN representative is scheduled to start peace talks this afternoon with newly elected Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki. Check out the full article on the Associated Press website. We must continue to pray for Kenya that they can finally overcome this struggle, and have peace again.

Yesterday, I had the honor of giving a presentation to a class at UCF about homelessness, poverty, and Rock for Hunger. It was sad to see that almost 90% of the class raised their hands when I asked who is registered to vote, and only 5% of the class raised their hand that hey are going to vote in the Florida presidential primaries today. We must never forget the hard work, and struggle our great peacekeepers, and Civil Rights activists have gone through to give American women, and African Americans a voice. As seen in Kenya, people take a lot of pride of getting the honor to vote. We once had this pride, and our youth used to stand up for this right! It is important that we don’t forget what our ancestors have done for us, and that we don’t silence the biggest gift they have giving to us, OUR VOICE! Go to RockTheVote.com to register to vote now.
