Rollins College 2nd Annual Hunger Banquet

>> Friday, November 16, 2007

For the past three years I have only been to the UCF Hunger Banquet. We have done very well with this event. My home boy Ameer that got me first inspired helping the homeless, then I organized the Hunger Banquet, and this year my girl Kraesly. It was very interesting to visit a Hunger Banquet organized by a different group of people. I have been so used to the UCF tradition of the Hunger Banquet as a major scale event after 14 years of its existence now. The Rollins College Crew did a fine job with their 2nd Annual Hunger Banquet. I really enjoyed the small more tightly packed setting of this event.

The event started off very traditional with learning all the facts. Over 8,000 in Orlando are homeless, over 350,000 living in poverty in just Central Florida. One out of four Americans is suffering from Poverty. One in four children in the world suffer from poverty, and every three second a child dies from Hunger related issues. Then they introduced the first speaker. That was me 8) I spoke on behalf of Rock for Hunger, and talked about what got me into this, and how much of a difference we are making. I stressed on the fact that everyone can make a difference. Pastor Brain helped end homelessness for 35 people as a homeless person! Next we had Barbara Salyes from the Society of St. Andrew in Central Florida take the Mic. She had a great speech about how people ignore the homeless and pretend they don’t exist. This makes it easier for us to ignore them. Just act is if they are not there. That is why some situations are as messed up as they are when it comes to passing ordinances against feeding them.

After that we had a great dinner. I shared my desert, and many other shared their food with the lower class. Rollins kids are a little more spoiled, and left last year when the lower class found out they are only getting bread and water. So, this year they gave food to everyone after the upper class was served. The last two speakers were an awesome girl from Rollins that spoke about international, and local poverty, and then Pastor Brian. Pastor B told his amazing story of Rags to Riches to Rags to Riches, and back to Rags, and back to where he is today. He is an awesome dude! I love that guy! For those of you who have not met him, you should come out on a Monday and hang out with us, and Pastor B. That’s my short version of the review. It was a great time, and it’s good to see Rollins College motivating their students to do great things. AWESOME JOB MEREDITH!
